Insurance and superbills. I don't participate directly with insurance plans and am considered an out-of-network provider. Payment is made directly to me at the time of your session.
If your insurance plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, you may be eligible for reimbursement for a portion of the session fee. I can provide you with a superbill that includes the information your insurance company may require to process an out-of-network claim.
Reimbursement varies significantly from one plan to another, so I recommend contacting your insurance company before beginning therapy. You may want to ask:
- Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health services?
- Do I have an out-of-network deductible, and how much of it has been met?
- After my deductible is met, what percentage or amount will I be reimbursed for an out-of-network psychotherapy session?
- Is there a limit on the number of sessions covered?
- How do I submit a superbill for reimbursement?
Your insurance company can give you the most accurate information about your specific coverage.
- Payment. Payment is due at the time of the session, collected securely through the SimplePractice client portal. Major credit cards, debit cards, and HSA or FSA cards are all accepted. If paying by HSA or FSA card, check with your plan administrator first: therapy is usually a covered expense, but they set the rules.
- Cancellations and missed sessions. Your session time is held for you, so sessions canceled or rescheduled with less than 48 hours' notice, as well as missed sessions, are charged the full session fee. I understand that unexpected situations sometimes come up, and we can talk about those when they do.
- Reduced-fee options. I keep a limited number of reduced-fee spots available for clients for whom the standard rate would be a significant financial barrier. If cost is standing between you and starting therapy, feel free to ask. It's a normal question and not an awkward one. We can talk about availability and what may be workable during the consultation.
Money, plainly
About the fee
My standard fee reflects my experience, the time and attention I give to each client, and my decision to keep a smaller practice so I can stay personally engaged in the work.
Just as importantly, I want to make sure I'm a good fit for what you're looking for. The free consultation gives us a chance to talk about what brings you to therapy, what you're hoping to work on, and whether my approach makes sense for you. If I don't think I'm the right therapist for what you need, I'll be honest about that.
I don't sell packages or ask you to commit to a certain number of sessions. We'll regularly talk about how therapy is going and whether the work continues to be helpful.
Still unsure
The questions people ask about cost.
What is a superbill, what happens if I cancel, and whether any of this is covered. All answered in plain language.
What exactly is a superbill?
A receipt formatted the way insurance companies expect: my license details, the dates of service, the procedure codes and a diagnosis code. You pay me, submit the superbill to your insurer, and they reimburse you directly according to your out-of-network benefits. I provide one on request, usually monthly or per session, whichever is easier for your plan.
Do you take HSA or FSA cards?
Yes, through the client portal. I am not able to tell you whether your particular plan allows it, and rules vary between administrators, so it is worth a quick check with them before your first session.
Is there any way to pay less than $275?
Possibly. I keep a limited number of reduced-fee spots available for clients for whom the standard rate would be a significant financial barrier. Availability varies, so feel free to ask about this during the consultation.
If you have out-of-network benefits, your insurance plan may also reimburse you for a portion of the session fee. Because coverage varies by plan, it's worth checking with your insurance company to understand what reimbursement may be available to you.
Longer answers on the FAQ page, including what happens if you need a higher level of care than I can provide. If you want the credentials behind the rate, the about page lists them in full, and the services page shows what each kind of session is for.
